2005/2006 ice Conditions archive

I am going to keep archiving all of the conditions for each year.   I hope that after several years that I will be able to compare the data and notice trends to be better able to predict when we should have ice.  I know betting on weather is goofy but it would be nice to know when the highest probability for local ice is so that I can plan my out of town trips when there are low probabilities of local ice and be at home when it should be good.  If you have any additional info from journals or camera records please let me know.  Even after the fact, more data is more better.

WEDNESDAY: 15 FEBRUARY 2006

NORTH CAROLINA:

Winding Stair:  A couple of leadable routes and lots of toproping.  It is starting to take a beating though.  Lets hope the temps go back down.

MONDAY: 13 FEBRUARY 2006

GEORGIA:

Hogpen Gap:  The road is closed and has been closed since Saturday.  Should be good ice but no way to confirm.

Rabun Bald:  Not in yet.

NORTH CAROLINA:

Hwy 215:  Routes are in good shape except for the tops. They look leadable from the ground then when you get to the topout it gets downright scary.

Whitesides:  Sympathy is touching but very thin.

Doughton Park:  Scott Gilliam reports that Big Daddy was in but thin.  He said his screws were good though.  New Moon to the right of Big Daddy was also lead by "a couple of nice guys from Boone".  The upper gully is thin but leadable and the short flows are in.

SUNDAY: 15 JANUARY 2006

GEORGIA:

Hogpen Gap:  Very thin but a few topropes are in and the bolted routes are leadable.

Rabun Bald:  Nada.

NORTH CAROLINA:

Hwy 215:  No report

Whitesides:  No report.

SATURDAY: 7 JANUARY 2006

It really warmed up during the week and rained all the way to the Virginia's.

I have to guess that most of the ice has fallen down.

GEORGIA:

Hogpen Gap:  Very thin but a few topropes are in and bonded well.

Rabun Bald:  Gone.

NORTH CAROLINA:

Hwy 215:  Nothing

Whitesides:  No report.

Big Lost Cove:  White Fang is climbable and do not have a report on Paradise Lost.  I have been told this area is officially closed to climbing on Jan. 15 for the falcon program but this may not be true.  The area where the ice climbs are, may not be part of the closed area.  Take your own chances.  Do not climb anywhere that the signs are posted saying closed.

FRIDAY: 30 DECEMBER 2005

Georgia:

Hogpen Gap:  The ice is holding on for the moment.

Rabun Bald:  Still fat.

North Carolina:

Hwy 215:  Thinning out but still climbable.

Whitesides:  Sympathy(Starshine) has melted mostly out but Mother Russia is still in.  Kinda wierd.

MONDAY: 26 DECEMBER 2005

Georgia:

Hogpen Gap:  The ice is fat.

Rabun Bald:  The ice here is way, way fat.  The best it has been in years.

North Carolina:

Hwy 215:  Ice is there but try and be original and go somewhere out in the woods.

Whitesides:  The ice is in.  Pick a route, almost any route.

Graveyard:  Worth the walk.

FRIDAY: 23 DECEMBER 2005

North Carolina:

Whitesides:  Starshine can be top-roped, but the topout is sketchy. Mother Russia is fat. The East Face is in leadable condition. Scotch on the Rocks is fat.

WEDNESDAY: 21 DECEMBER 2005

Georgia:

Hogpen Gap:  Good conditions with leadable ice.

SUNDAY: 18 DECEMBER 2005

Georgia:

Rabun Bald:  Good conditions with leadable ice.

SATURDAY: 17 DECEMBER 2005

Georgia:

Hogpen Gap:  Good conditions with leadable ice. As of Saturday night, the road is closed. Check GADOT - 888-424-4929.

North Carolina:

Hwy 215:  Fair conditions with leadable ice. Top-outs may be sketchy.

Whitesides:  Good conditions with leadable ice. Scotch on the Rocks is in. Starshine and Mother Russia appear to be in from the road, but I don't have a confirmation.

MONDAY:  12 DECEMBER 2005

Georgia:

Hogpen Gap:  Ice is getting fat.  Several routes led and more coming into shape.  The forecast shows even more improvement.

Yonah Mountain:  The North Face is getting better but not worth the walk yet.

NORTH CAROLINA

Hwy. 215:  Getting better but not great yet.

Graveyard:  Ice is looking good.  Some leadable routes are in.

Whitesides:   The east face is fat and Scotch on the Rocks is leadable.

Doughton Park:   One vague report said that the ice was in but gave no specifics.

WEDNESDAY:  7 DECEMBER 2005

Georgia:

Hogpen Gap:  Ice is forming.  A couple of the mixed routes are leadable but no screw turning yet.

Yonah Mountain:  The entire North Face is covered by a thin sheet of ice but nothing significant yet.
