MORE GRAVEYARD FIELDS

The climbs here seem to be some of the most consistent in Western N.C.  A combination of high altitude, above 5,000 ft., lots of shade on the cliffs and good water flow provides all the necessary ingredients to form good ice.  Another reason that it forms well is it's low amount of traffic.  Although it is a road cut area climbing is only allowed when the road is closed.  Very few people are willing to man up for the approach when you have to drive right by the 215 road cut where you can belay off the bumper of your truck.

Approach times will vary but I will at least tell you how long it takes me under different circumstances.  Dry pavement walk takes me two hours, dry pavement mountain bike ride a little over one hour.  Walking in fresh snow takes 2.5 to 3 hours.  I can ski in in about an hour and forty-five minutes.  All of these times take in account for a full climbing pack.  Cell phones do work here and I would recommend one in case of an accident so far from the truck.

A SHORT BUT NICE CLIMB
