North Carolina BACKCOUNTRY

There are more routes scattered throughout the mountains of western North Carolina than can be counted.  Check out a few of the climbs that require a high level of commitment just to find them.  While the technical difficulty of some of these is not that great the settings and the remoteness add a special charm.

Frozen Heart is on public property but the only legal access without crossing private property is long, obtuse and hard to find.  About the only way to learn how to get there is to get introduced by someone that has been there.  I have climbed this route three or four times and don't think I could give a written approach description that would actually work.

This area was the scene of a fiasco where a well known local climber fell and broke his ankles.  It was a bad scene so if you decide to wander the North Carolina back country searching for ice, be careful when your off on a walk about.   Remember this sport is dangerous, even on technically easy climbs stuff happens.  I broke a pick here once and a crampon another time.  Stuff happens so be careful.
