STAGE 20
The podium ceremony in Paris is the one to see of all ceremonies. This was the only time that there was an audible boo from the crowd when Lance took the stage. All of the other times there was a resounding cheer but the Paris crowd was not as enthused by the final result. The cheer that went up for Richard Viranque was deafening. It warmed my heart to hear the United States National Anthem played on the Champs. Except for Lance and Lemond's Le Tour victories this only happens when we liberate France from a tyrant. i.e. WW1 and WW2.
As the U.S. National Anthem was played, we stood upon our tree limb and sang as loud as we could. This seemed to upset a large number of folks that appeared to be of middle eastern, Muslem, decent. They gathered under our tree in a large crowd and tried to shake us out of the tree. We were undeterred and continued to sing until the song was over.
