2005 ATHENS

TWILIGHT CRITERIUM

Vassili  Davidenco dominated the majority of this race.  At the beginning of this event I commented to another person that it seemed really strange to not see the Navigators represented any better than with two riders.  Even though they are shifting their focus to a more European schedule I was used to seeing a large field of blue every year in Athens.  When Ed Beeman told me at the Tour de Georgia that they were only sending two riders to the Twilight I was wondering if he had lost his mind when he cut his hair.  I guess he really does know what he is doing.  On at least every third lap Vassili held the lead and he spent most of the race punishing the other riders.  Almost everyone expected the race to go to Healthnet with their full team of strong riders.  The super strong Russian had other plans.  He stayed at the front and drove the field into the ground and managed to keep enough in reserve to blow them out in the final sprint to the line.  This was one of the bravest and boldest rides I have ever witnessed in Athens.
