2004 ATHENS GREENWAY
ROAD RACES
12:05 p.m.
This mornings road races are being run in a nasty thunderstorm. Even with the bad weather the riders are racing hard. There are virtually no spectators her to watch but who expects fans to have the fortitude to endure these conditions for racers that are not on the cover of mainstream magazines. It just shows that many fans do not have a true heart for cycling and need to bet involved and excited about local events. Other than a few friends and family members these races were just for the cyclists.
2:30 p.m.
The rain has stopped and the cat 2 race has ended. These guys started in the rain but it stopped about half way through this race. The only folks that are going to get to race in the dry are the cat 5's. There were multiple wrecks in every race today due to slick conditions. There was one turn in particular that has a wide white stripe painted on the pavement and an ambulance was kept on station for every race here. It was needed too.

The road racing is over and the cat 5's were the only group to manage a clean race. Not a single wreck. Dry pavement really makes a difference. If the rain holds off then we should have a good evening for the crits. The riders really put out in miserable conditions today in an effort to qualify for tonight's events.
