2008 TOUR DE GEORGIA

STAGE ONE PRESS CONFERENCE

At the conclusion of Stage One our gal in the field, Carol, got to ask several questions of the key players at this juncture of the Tour de Georgia.  For some reason it seems like there are few press people at these events and the ones that are there are playing a big game of "mums the word".  I guess that as the race progresses more reporters will show up on the tail end and start firing the questions like machine guns rattling in a battle.

CoolBicycling's first question was directed at Scott Nydan of BMC racing.  Carol asked, "Scott, from the comments made yesterday during the pre-race conference it was very apparent that a major concern for all the cyclists was the strong winds they had experienced over the past couple of days on the road from the island to the mainland.   How was the wind today compared to the pre-race days and did you find it to be a major factor after all or was it a less windy day today?"

Scott answered by saying, "During our pre-race training over the past few days we had to deal with some very strong crosswinds on the island road which did concern us all.  The wind was on our minds coming into today's stage but fortunately, for all the cyclists, the crosswinds were not near as strong today and did not seem to play a major factor in the outcome of today's stage."

CoolBicycling's next question from Carol was directed at stage winner Ivan Domingaz of Toyota-United.  Carol asked, "Ivan, this is not a technical question, its about you as a person.  Its obvious to everyone around you that you are a very humble, caring individual with a giving heart, treating everyone with total equality at all times.  Its clearly seen that your positive attitude has an encouraging influence on your team members.  You stated earlier that during today's stage you kept telling your team not to worry about anything and you said you just take one day at a time.  Where does that shining character come from?"

Some highlights from his rather lengthy answer are as follows; "Thank you for that question.  It comes from my mother and my siblings and the way I was brought up back home.  Its funny you should ask me that because my wife asked me the same thing.  She said I always give to others without looking for anything in return.  I do treat everyone equal and never think I am better in any way than any other person around me.  I always say 'come on you can stay at my house'.  It comes from my mother."

At CoolBicycling.com we are looking for the human element as much as the cycling details.  People will be racing bikes for as long as man exists, but what makes the events special are the participants, not just the sport itself.  Remember, Carol is the one who asked Lance Armstrong, during the press conference in Augusta when he announced his retirement, if Sheryl Crow was as good a cook as she is a singer/songwriter.   We want a mix of information to help understand not only the race but the individuals who participate in it.
