Perimiter security equipment can mean the difference between living and dying in a situation where a threat may approach your location from a direction you can't see due to terrain, vegitation, obstructions or distance. Knowing a single person or a group is approaching, no matter what direction, even if your taking a nap or just looking the wrong way makes electronic perimiter security devices almost mandatory for a lone operator or small group. While it does not mean you can forget good fieldcraft or keeping someone on watch there comes a time where everyone needs rest and may not be able to watch every direction 24 hours per day for days or weeks on end. Many devices designed to protect FOBs, airstrips or even large bases can be used to know if someone is creeping up to the fence of your home alerting you to a threat. Whether for home, business, military, asset protection or hunting electronic gadgets can increase your situational awerness by miles if need.

VIETNAM ERA TRC-3A SEISMIC PERIMITER SECURITY

     Geophone-based Platoon Seismic Intrusion Detector transmitters operate on one or two 9 volt batteries. Operates well on one battery but use two batteries if set is to be in place for longer periods, such as 30 days. If use lithium 9V batteries then can get up to six months before a swap is required and they don't risk corrosion of battery compartment. These were produced during the Vietnam era but are still very popular and useful  proven over fifty years can still be put into service and monitored with your scanner or handi-talkie. The receivers can still be found but using a scanner or programing the frequencies of your receivers in your handheld radio (a dual watch radio with one side always in scan mode really works great) and when your scanner or handheld beeps just have to look at frquency it locked on to know where your threat is aproaching from.

   The transmitter is placed in perimeter locations where you want advance warning of the approach of a person, vehicle, or even animals (depending upon the sensitivity setting) into a protected area. This unit is a reliable way to add a measure of security that is difficult to replicate with other devices. Military issued TRC-3A Wireless seismic intrusion detectors are still as good as modern perimeter protection units with only real differenc is GWOT era systems work in 1.2, 2.4 or 5 GHz bands.. Seismic probe detects minute earth vibrations such as a person walking, vehicle driving by or even low flying aircraft within a 20-30 yard circumference around the probe. The probe also has its own sensitivity setting, The detection of ground vibrations by the seismic probe are sent via attached transmitter to your chosen receiver. Intruders never knows they are detected until it's too late.The probe sensor is connected to the transmitter by an eight-foot cable which can be extended if need. This allows the sensor itself to be buried or submerged.

   The probe sensor can monitor footstep vibrations in an area 260 feet in diameter and movement of heavy vehicles to a much greater distance. Activated in seconds the sensor/transmitter is corrosion-resistant and ruggedized for reliable operation under severe conditions. These are military grade equipment even to this day and I will buy more when find at fair price. The transmitter has a small "whip" antenna that looks like a blade of grass and transmits a tone back to your radio receiver. The radio reciever can be as far away as 100 yards from the transmitter when it is within line of sight not obstructed by hills. If monitored by a radio with high gain antenna on a tower or roof-top I can pick up the transmitter tones from a mile away or even farther. A pulse tone will come across the radio frequency telling you someone or something is coming within range of the sensor. Transmitter has built-in sensitivity controls and an on/off switch. The system can be used with any combination of one to four transmitters. The transmitter has the number of "dots" that is transmitted. Example "this unit has 4 dots" means that there would be four beeps broadcasted on the frequency printed on transmitter.

   From top to bottom I have tried to show the evolution of the PEWS sytem from first genertion through the eqquipment used at the height of GWOT. there are more advanced systems and some that cover huge areas with ground sensors, radar, Lidar and drones all integrated giving troops or high threat buildings such as embasies to corporate offices situationally aware of their surroundings. Most of this a person who needs to protct a facility or is just an armchair warrior who wants to protect their back yard from zombies if you shop carefully can have all this tacticool stuff.
