The M14 E2/M14A1 select fire version of the standard M14 was used as a squad automatic weapon. This was the solution to the full-automatic M14 being difficult to control and the never-issued M15 not making it to the field. The developmental model was known as the M14E2. As a conceptional weapon developed by the Infantry School, it was known as the M14 (USAIB) (United States Army Infantry Board). It was issued in 1963 and redesignated as M14A1 in 1966.

It has a full pistol-gripped in-line stock to control recoil, a plastic upper forend to save weight, muzzle compensator, BAR sling, M2 bipod and a folding metal vertical grip mounted under the forend of the stock. Although an improvement over the M14 when in full-auto, it was still difficult to control, overheated rapidly and the 20-round magazine limited its ability to deliver continuous suppressive fire.    Been a long time since had a canoe paddle E2 stock in the shop. Double boxed and packed like the crown Jewels. Well done. This one came in this morning from Fred's. Jack was nice enough to send along one consider in the superb category and a new combo tool to boot. Hope to get some oil on it.

MORE FUM WITH THE M14E2

Got out one of my LRB M14BR builds from 2021. Barrel is a chrome lined Bula USGI standard configuration from Ted Brown. Rest of the parts are USGI in an E2 stock from Fred's. Ammo is 115 Bergers in RA-68 cases over 45 gn of N-201 set off with 210Ms. Shop scope is an old Burris 4.5 - 14 mounted on a high Bassett so can use the irons under the mount. Not A favorite set up for any kind of accurate shooting. The bottom photos show the LRB M14BR is back in it's real stock. Shooting in this configuration is way more pleasing than the E2 configuration. The E2 stock and hardware are back in storage where they belong.
