STAGE 9, 2004 LE TOUR
Stage 9 from Saint-Leonard-de-Noblat to Gueret was our first stage of the 2004 Le Tour de France. After a long drive from Paris the day before, we arrived in Gueret late to find only one restaurant still open. We soon discovered that in most small towns in France everything closes early except the bars. We ate a good vegetarian pizza which turned out to be our only meal eaten in a restaurant on the entire trip. We slept that night in a parking lot at about the 4 kilometer to go line on the stage 9 course. We woke up early and found a grocery store to stock up on supplies for the next few days. After fixing breakfast and a picnic lunch we wandered off to follow the course and find the finish line.
