BALLISTIC BARRIERS

Every bullet that is stopped by a barrier of any type is one less potential dead or wounded person who is under the roof of your building and thus under your care. When doing security surveys of buildings wheteher business, medical, church or school we see all types of construction techniques. 95% of our surveys involve existing buldings but on occasion we are consulted when a facility is in its planning phases. When we get this opportunity it is much easier to create safe areas along with barriers in random higher threat areas without adding significant cost to the building. If your church is embarking on a building program or about to build a new medical facility where certain reception areas and such will not likely be reconfigured to point of moving walls or other smaller features just a few more areas with just a four to six foot concrete hip wall before framing continues to ceiling can give occupants of rooms with secure doors to either be below line of gunfire or able to duck low enough the wall becomes a life saver. Reception and check in kiosks can have a concrete base much cheaper than we can retrofit it with ballistic materials after the building is complete. If in the design phase we would be happy to make suggestions for churches free and a small charge for commercial clients that somewhat helps offset our pro bono consulting. If your woring on a remodel its also a good time to visit ballistic barriers but even if your building is done and have no changes in mind there are always ways we can add ballistic barriers from a variety of materials to create safe or safer areas for your staff, clients or congregations. We feel childrens areas are of top priority to add protection.

In the U.S. barriers are usually rated by Umderwriters Labratories aka the small UL in a circle logo you see so often it becomes almost unnoticed over the years. some businesses such as banks and private businesses that handle a lot of cash are required to have U.L. certified ballistic barriers by their insurance underwriters. Its always better to use U.L. certified materials if your budget allows but non certified materials that still get the job accomplished and the cost difference is the deal breaker between having ballistic barriers or not we personally opt for non U.L. materials in our business facility and personal homes rather than no barriers.

BALLISTIC & NON BALLISTIC WINDOW FILMS

The above photos show a series of photographs where a piece of standard 1/4" tempered glass was shot in first with no laminate using an AR 15 and milspec M193 Ball ammunition. the glass didn't even really do anything to even slow the bullets or even alter their paths. The next photo shows same thickness of glass in same frame with 3M Ultra 800 security film. while bullets penetrated they were deformed and slowed by the film enough to increase occupants safety. This film properly applied makes it almost impossible for someone to penetrate a windo using a tool such as a hammer or brick. In fact have seen strong healthy young men with baseball bats eventually tire and quit trying to beat their way through a window with this level of film. The third photograph on the right shows same glass with both 3M Ultra 800 and 3M S70 film which almost stopped the rifle projectiles and not only slowed them significantly they were distorted enough to reduce lethality by a huge factor. We are an authorized reseller and installer for almost every 3M film made except the high security films. They only allow one vendor per mapped region for these films and we were their second applicant thus lost the territory. If you have to ask how much this film costs you probably cannot afford the higher grades but if interested check the 3M website under security window films for a dealer in your area. its a great product if you have a liberal government budget.

Since we lost our bid for our local territory on the 3M films (Probably best as would probably waste a lot of time doing bids that stunned clients who have even good security budgets) we have found three other security films that work great. Our top line product will stop a 9mm handgun bullet when installed on standard tempered glass and makes forced entry extremely difficult. It (like all our security films) are State of Florida and FEMA rated for Hurricane standards where required for new construction. Our intermediate and lightest grade films along with our highest threat film not only decrease the chance for objects thrown in hurricane and tornado debris to penetrate your windows. I personally use the medium grade film on all my upper floor windows and the heavier film that will stop a fair number of handgun bullets (but not U.L. ballistic certified) on my ground floor windows. On my high threat windows I place a piece of abrasion resistant polycarbonate (not always U.L. rated but tested in house) that ensures no handgun bullets are coming though my living room or bedroom windows. I even have a couple of windows with polycarbonate liners that will stop light rifle fire. I can use the films we have tested in combination with an abrasion resistant polycarbonate liner that will stop most traditional handguns and their projectiles for less investment than the cost of the 3M Ultra Prestige series window films. Most of our clients are budget concious so we provide the most protection we can inside their budget allowance.

The one common thing found among most U.L. Rated ballistic material is cost. Not only is there a lot of engineering, product design and marketing of materials the U.L. testing is not cheap either. For clients on a strict budget we offer materials we can only call security products but have tested them extensively in-house and will provide sample pieces of the actual material we use on your project and actually shoot them with a variety of firearms and bullet designs so the client has a very good idea of what it will and will not stop. On clear polycarbonates we have some products that do a very good job with handgun bullets and are not budget killers. Stopping rifle bullets in a retrofit or new project is never cheap but if can use concrete in your project then rifle bullets can be stopped for the price of a poured concrete slab. A six to eight inch concrete slab as the base for your counters can be done, especially if have a congregation member in the business or do during construction involving other concrete being poured its very cost effective. Mild steel is amazingly poor material for stopping bullets but certain abrasion resistant alloys do a great job at a cost that reflects its hardness.
