THE W4TL-MOBILE
Except for the fact that all of this cool gear is in a Ford, this is a dream machine of a mobile rig. When W4TL decides to put together some radios he plays to win whether it is his personal truck, his bug out kit or his home shack.
W4TL's personal comments:
The setup seems to be working quite well. Have made several contacts in the NVIS configuration with the antenna angled at 45 degrees. Just dial in the frequency hit the PF key on the TS 480 and the antenna starts tuning for minimum SWR. When it located resonance you are ready to transmit with an SWR of 1:5 to 1 or less across the entire spectrum from 80 through 10 meters with 200 watts of RF getting to the antenna.
The Icom 2820 works well with the Larsen antenna and am able to access the local analog repeaters as well as the D-Star repeaters. The Cobra CB works well too. It is real handy when towing to chat with fellow campers in our club who do not have amateur licenses. Motor noise is almost non-existent.
Grounding was accomplished by grounding the truck bed to the rails with a 1" braid and the bonding the truck bed to the cab with a 1" strap on each side of the bed. A good ground for the CB and dual band antenna, which are both mounted to the aluminum tool box was accomplished by bonding the box to the Tarheel mount which is bonded to the truck bed.
