SAFARILAND ZERO G COVERT ARMOR
The Safariland Zero G covert armor kit is one of my favorites but only have one full kit and a spare carrier for the day I wear this carrier out. One of this carriers best features for comfort is one of its weaknesses for durability unless like me can sew plus have access to a seamstress. The lower straps are all one connected assembly and if one piece of Velcro pulls loose then its a mess. I have worn this kit on average of once a week for a couple years now and not blown a velcro tab but recently when woke up in post-op from an outpatient procedure on my spine noticed my armor fit very odd and uncomfortable. Normally they wait for me to wake and dress myself but due to a busy day apparently the nurses tried to dress me and putting on my armor they had opened a zipper of carrier so panel was trying to slip out and blown two tack on a Velcro tab requiring me to do a repair.
Have not tried to see if can get this Velcro assembly as a replacement part yet but if like majority of my kits could justpull correct width and length Velcro and elastic strap from my assortment of extras and have no worries. Why I advise if only have one kit that has a very unique piece to have spare parts. Did not want to use my replacement carrier or its strap assembly thus reason everyone should have some sewing skills. Watched a special about SEAL Team 6 and when asked what the most important skill an operator had learned as a SEAL he said it was the ability to sew because they had to modify, repair and even make some specialty gear themselves for special missions. Said much time was spent reinforcing, repairing and modifying gear if known to have weak points during down time before a mission waiting for the "go light".
This kit is the thinnest NIJ 3a kit I own and has no trauma panel in the rear as would require modification as do many covert kits. Luckily was able to fit an 8"x10" Dyneema special threat plate to the front with a little modification to the trauma panel pouch. Knowing I have a full Dyneema NIJ 3a+ special threat plate rated to stop almost every handgun special threat round known stand alone is comforting. While pocket would only accept a 6"x9" trauma panel was easily modified to accept an 8"x10" Protech/Safariland Multi-threat plate that without the soft armor behind it should stop any handgun round thus allow the soft armor to absorb most of the blunt force trauma. If take a hot round to sternum I do not want to be down trying to recover from my heart muscle taking such a thumping it wants to skip a few beats or shut down or in shock from a broken sternum. In this kit feel should be able to take even a hotrod 10mm, 357 SIG or similar round to trauma panel, be able to suck it up and keep fighting.
