AA4BA TOWER LIGHTNING ARRESTORS
The hinge pin of the tower grounding system is the lightning arrestor. In order to shunt the electromagnetic pulse associated with a lightning strike to ground, the system must have a "switch" that keeps the pulse from entering the shack and fully directed toward ground. This device used to stop the pulse from travelling through the coax an into the building is called a lightning arrestor.
In order for the arrestor to function it needs to be installed properly. Most arrestors use a gas discharge tube that allows RF to flow to the antennas but when damaging electricity tries to flow through the coax into the shack, the discharge tubes acts as a fuse and breaks the circuit, thus shunting the EMP into the grounding system.
I CONVERTED A METER BASE INTO AN ARRESTOR ENCLOSURE
I FIRST REMOVED ALL OF THE METER AND ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS
I INSTALLED A PVC BACKING BOARD AND THEN A PIECE OF 16 GAUGE COPPER PLATE
NEXT CAME A LUG FOR THE GROUND WIRE AND A PLEXIGLASS WINDOW
I REALLY LIKE THE ALPHA/DELTA LIGHTNING ARRESTORS
THEY HAVE A REPLACEABLE GAS DISCHARGE TUBE AND ARE MILITARY GRADE
I PREFER N CONNECTORS FOR WATER RESISTENCE AND TRUE 50 OHM IMPEDIENCE
COAX CABLE IS ROUTED THROUGH WEATHER HEADS & PVC PIPE
