2005 TOUR DE GEORGIA

LANCE ARMSTRONG INTERVIEW

Monday, 18 April 2005.

Lance announced that he is going to retire after this years Le Tour de France.  His stated reasons were this.  "After finally deciding to ride in La Tour de France, leaving my kids in Texas was harder than its ever been before.  It was something like I've never experienced before.  They are changing daily, if not hourly and when I came back I was blown away by the changes in their attitude and intelligence.  The most important thing to me now is not to miss this key time in their lives."

He went on to say, "My dream is to go out on top.  This would be a big deal for me.  I still love what I do.  The passion and will to win another one (Le Tour de France) is there.  To win one final one and stop is pretty compelling to me but I make no promises."

We were able to ask lance a couple of questions ourselves.  Carol went for the human interest questions not directly related to bicycling.  She asked if he was enjoying his new motorcycle which elicited a grin and a big fat yes.  She also asked him if Sheryl was a good cook.  Lances reply to this was, "Sheryl is watching this so I don't want to get myself in trouble...  She is good at ordering pizza and making dinner reservations."  My question was how the climbing stages at the Tour de Georgia compared to the mountain stages of Le tour de France.  He said, "the climbs in North Georgia are steeper than in France but not as long."  He also added, "Brasstown is really tough."

Lance was very emphatic that he would not race professionally ever again after Le Tour.  He was unsure if the Tour de Georgia would be his last race in America.  He hinted that he may participate in one more race, possibly during the month of May.  He said he had been checking the internet for possibilities and he had some interest in some Kolo"rad"o events.  Many of the questions asked were the same old song and dance so ya'll have heard it and don't need it regurgitated here.

We have several pages under works covering all that we saw today.  From interviews with team mechanics, riders and directors we have it all.  Team coolbicycling.com is in the thick of things and are going to bring our audience the best coverage possible from a small staff.   Cycling is our passion.
