STAGE 1 STATISTICS
Stage 1 starts in downtown Augusta which is famous for its River Walk along the banks of the Savannah River. This is one of my favorite towns in South Georgia. If you have to be in the flatlands then this is about as good as it gets. There is plenty of fine dining and nightlife if that is your kind of entertainment. There is a lot of scenic and historical sites to see also. I tend to spend most of my time skating when here so if you see some freak trying to cover the race on a pair of in-line skates then you will know what is growing on.
This stage covers approximately 129 miles and finishes in Macon. This is the third year that Macon has hosted a stage. Macon is a nice city which is close enough to Atlanta to be convienent and still retains a good deal of old Southern Charm. There are lots of historic places to visit here and it is quite popular for conventions. It has hosted the Georgia State Gideons convention on multiple occasions and will again next year.
This stage will be a sprinters delight and promises an exciting finish. Look for the peloton to have a serious fight to the finish here. I am sure that the Discovery Team will hang back a little and protect Lance from any potential disaster at the front of the pack.
Remember that if you get any real cool shots of this stage or have a comment to pass on to the peanut gallery please send it to cycling@coolbicyling.com. For high resolution printable .pdf files of these maps follow this link the the Official Tour de Georgia website.
