"RECALIBRATION" FEEDBACK

I am now getting some more feedback on the recall/recalibration, whichever you choose to call it.  I tend to say that the MoCo is trying to fix a known problem without admitting they have purposely sold poorly running bikes.  Most of the feedback has been positive but there are still a few that are saying that the recalibration has not helped and one person that said it made his bike worse.

Got mine done today, went to the dealer and they hadn't heard about it. The Service manager was a little pissed that he didn't know, anyway they did the remap, took about 15 minutes. I rode about 50 miles on the way home, the bike ran fine, I didn't notice a big difference, although I thought it ran a little smoother at low RPMs but I could have been reacting to the fact that "something' had been done, I need to ride it more.

I took mine in for the 1000K service about a month ago and while I can't prove it I'm fairly certain they did a re-map at that time.  It ran much smoother and quieter than before I took it in and it seemed to have a little more torque.  I installed the PC III, new pipes and a breather  2 weeks ago anyway so their re-map wouldn't effect me anyway now.  Thanks for the heads-up, you probably helped quite a few people, especially the touring model owners.

Regarding the recall. I spoke to "my" service manager on Saturday, he said he just received notice, and in fact did an 07 that Friday. He said to have it in Monday at opening and they would take care of it. Monday morning I was there at opening and 45 minutes later I rode off in my remapped, and washed, 07.

I put 105 miles on it that afternoon, never heard a ping.

Hello Michael,

I went to my dealer with the service bulletin and the recall note printed out.  They immediately called the head-wrench to evaluate this. No problem he replied, you can come by anytime you like and we will load the new ECM mapping.  Apparently, they are aware of this recall and are checking every new bike regarding this issue, loading the newest mapping if necessary. All 2007 bikes in the showroom and in the pre-sales zone have the new mapping.

Since my bike was manufactured pre new software, it will need the upload.  I was quite surprised (but very glad) that, here in Belgium, my HD dealer seems to be well informed.  I will keep you posted regarding my experience after the new mapping is installed on my bike.

Regards,

P. V.

And here is the follow-up...

Dear Michael,

Had the mapping “upgrade” done on Saturday. I spent most of Sunday on my bike since I wanted to know if there was an improvement and yes indeed. The engine runs smoother now, allowing me to keep it in 2nd gear when slow cornering, picking up from 1500 rpm without acting up. I can also keep it in 4th doing 1800 rpm with slower traffic ahead and accelerate flawlessly to overtake without shifting down. Before, anything below 2000 rpm was out of the question without stressing the engine in gear 3 and 4. Gear 5 and 6 require 2500 rpm to run smooth but that is quite normal.
A nice side kick is that the exhaust note has also changed running low revs to a deeper and more pleasant sound.
As far as I can tell the remap has retarded the ignition in the low rev section smoothing the pulses of the engine and allowing to dial in more throttle without stressing it and making it detonate.
I am satisfied with this improvement.
Concerning the heat issue, I have no idea whatsoever since it was about 42° on Sunday.

Kind regards,
P. V.

The remap works great, it has a way smoother power curve in low rpm, and virtualy no surge when backing off the throttle.

The 5th/6th gear noise.. they did not charge me for checking it out, and the service manager said he rode the bike 9 miles and it is normal whine in 5th.  I told him the bike really needs to be warmed up, and I'm not sure that 9 miles in 48 degree weather is enough. (I don't think he could ride 9 miles in 5th gear anyway.. as he would get killed going less than 65 on the fwy,and there is no other street long enough to get there).

He did say HD is aware of the problem and would most likely find a fix, he also suggested a heavy trans fluid. (  like redline shockproof heavy) though I had mine set up with synth3.  The trans was a little quieter, but still have the rocks/spoons in the trans noise.

Side note, I went to the bike show in Long Beach (CA) over the weekend and spoke with a HD rep.  He said he was aware of the problem, but only when under 2000 rpm.. I stated that it happen at 2500 to 3000 as well..  he gave me the number at customer service and told me to tell them his name when I called.  he wanted me to let them know of my complaint...

I will follow up after my phone call..

saw your site through  hd forums.
Have an 07rk bought in 1st week of august. 8500mi so far.
runs hot but with recall download "d" it has cooled down some. maybe still 15 degrees hotter than old bike. Ping seems to have faded as well. hp and torque curve is also much more functional and smooth. I will tell ya I switched to amsoil 20/20 syn at first oils change(500mi).also to 75/90 svg gear lube in tranny. This helped temp prior to download and also quieted down 5th gear in tranny. Although it still sucks. I put 2500 mi on it in Tenn.  And area back in august and doing the skyline and twisties down there you spent a lot of time in 5th aand as a touring bike goes it clearly could have been quieter.
My local dealer told me that to get op out of engine do pipes, air and go to sert tuning. (must be dyno'd) and sert is married to bike then .he said most in shop are doing this and a big difference is noticed. MY plan in spring.  Otherwise the bike is great on the highway.  Tell OL hang in there Harley will make good. Sometimes we pay to be the first on the block with a new toy..

ride it like you stole it

I have 1,000 miles on my new scooter and now experiencing the pipes glowing red. I work nights and that's when I noticed the problem. I had the H-D remap done and it did not help. I to believe that Harley should resolve this issue for I have purchased five new bikes in the last six years. You would think they would take care of valued ?? customers. I am taking it back to the dealer tomorrow. I will keep you posted on any fixes offered. I like others noticed 5th gear noise when new, and now it is quiet after 1,000 miles.

Just wanted you to know that the down load works like a champ,it was night and day difference.I can lug the bike down to 1000rpms now and it will pull from it also. It seems to have a lot more power now than before. The day I was to install a RaceTuner I got your email letting me know about download. When I went to the dealer to ask about it they were meeting me at the door to let me know about it.Thanks for getting the word out,you have no doubt helped a few people.

Thanks Bryan

Sir,

I purchased an 07 FLHT on Sept 21. To date I have ridden it a total of 3500 miles and have been very pleased with it and its performance. It has exceeded my expectations.
Recently I had been shown your website with all the (potential) problems with the 07's... btw, I dont have any problems with my 06 FXDI Superglide.
So... this month, I rec'd a letter from HD MoCo saying to bring the 07 in for a warranty recall remap (yes it did say recall). Mind you now I have had no problems or issues with my new scoot, but if HD says it needs fixen then maybe I should do as am told. So I took it to my dealer who does service on several of my bikes, I tend to have at least 2 at a time... I ride a lot, +24k/yr. They took great care of me, rode in, remap, rode out, less than 30 minutes. At the time the weather was not cooperative, so I rode home and parked it. Two weeks later I took it out for long ride to assess the change. WTF!. It ran like dog doo. It ran but had no power. It ran but was no longer silky smooth, had no pulling power and all the shift points where f...ked. It didn't run well below 3k/rpm and even there it ran like dogsnot. I cut my ride short and called the dealer. They said they would put the original map back in it.
What to do, what to do? I have a brand new big scoot with big road plans and it runs crappy. I can put it back the way it was and worry. I can't live with it the way it is. I can spend a bunch of money for pipes, maps, etc. I am pissed! This is the first big bike I forked out big money for and was absolutley happy with it in stock form, no need to buy a whole lot of chrome crap, etc.
I dont like going backward. So I purchased a Stage 1 airkit and put the bugger on myself. No remap... not yet. I have taken the bike out twice now for little 50 miler round trips. My current assesment is that my new bike is back. It runs smooth again, has pulling power in the 2k's. I don't lug it, ride near 3k. The shift points seem to be back... or close. It may be my memory, I can't say it has all the power back, but I am happy riding it again.. it feels good like its 'spose to.
I may do some pipe work later this year, just was not in the budget at the moment and I dont like financial suprises.
All in all, I am back to square one and out just one C note with a modest upgrade.
Thanks for the website info. I will keep you posted on developments.

got a 07 ultra and had the same heat problem. had a lot of noise in the primary. took the bike in, they tightened the chain adjuster and it seemed to stop the noise on the left side. they also put that new down-load into it. seems to have a lot more power, and smoother riding. we will se in the summer about the heat.

As ya'll get your bikes back from the recall service let me know what you think.  Need to let the masses know if it helps or not.  I really hope it does.  I am going to keep chasing this and will post what I find out A.S.A.P.  In case you have missed it on the other pages my contact address is biners@crowderinc.com.
